I have ranked my top favorite pieces from The Marquette Tribune from the Fall of 2013, partly because I am absolutely obsessed, but mostly because I am keeping myself from studying my finals.
Writing is much more than good reporting, although that is essential. Writing is finding great stories and sharing them in a way that gives you something that you did not have before. I think the authors of these accomplished that.
This list does not list all the great work on the Tribune. It was very difficult to narrow it down to 15 articles. Also, it doesn't include content from our designers and photographers, which, let's be honest are also fantastic.
Regardless, here are my picks:
#15 - UFC 164 crowd shows MMA has rabid fan base by Patrick Leary
I am a big fan of a good anecdotal lede, especially in a sports story like this. Pat gave us some content here that we usually do not get to see in the Tribune.

#14 - Club hockey gets big wins in physical series against Northwestern by Jacob Born
The action starts right away and pulls you into the story immediately. The more details the better, and there were a lot of good details here.

#13 - LIMO services maintained as example for other universities by Claudia Brokish
I enjoy when we destroy the myths perpetuated throughout the university. This story was interesting and entertaining to put together, despite some paranoid sources.

#12 - Swedish connection far from home by Drew Dawson
This piece featured two men's soccer players, both from Sweden but who did not know each other but who became friends while at Marquette. Something different from the sports section.

#11 - Students contribute to issues with faculty advising by
Natalie Wickman
I want to recognize the amount of work and on-the-record, off-the-record frustrations Natalie had to deal with when putting together this project. It covered the advising issue very well.

#10 - MUSG forms ad-hoc committee to review SOF process by
Joe Kvartunas and Alec Brooks
It's not very often that you can say that your story is the cause of its lede. Despite the headache it took to get the information from MUSG, this project was fantastic and offered a lot of interesting angles.

#9 - What we forgot about the Beat generation by Erin Heffernan
One of Erin's many fantastic columns this semester. Erin dives into the Beats generation and the overlooked issues that came with the youthful literary movement.

#8 - Lack of president, provost poses challenges for College of Business by Joe Kaiser
This was a great piece exposing the effect of the president's resignation on the College of Business' search for a new dean. It really captures the conflict of the issue.

#7 - Wisconsin Skydiving thrills at 15,000 by Claire Nowak
Claire's willing to do anything for a good, entertaining story. This article illustrates the enterprise spirit that I think has made the Marquee section so great this semester.

#6 - Becoming an audio bookworm by Erin Heffernan
I loved this column so much because it was so original, and just so well-written. Erin was able to describe an art medium that I really never thought of before. So that's cool.

#5 - Ghosts of Marquette yearbooks past by Erin Heffernan
What can I say? I am a fan of Erin's column. I know Erin spent hours sifting through the archived Hilltops for the column. It was such an entertaining read.

#4 - Few specifics given in Pilarz resignation by Joe Kaiser
Straight from hell week, this was a fantastic overview into the issues surrounding the president's resignation. I am so proud as to how quickly the Tribune pulled it's resources together for this piece, and Joe did a fantastic job putting it together in an understandable and edgy way.

#3 - MU strives for a more sustainable campus by Kelly Meyerhofer
I applaud Kelly for taking such a huge story with a hundred angles and putting into a digestible and entertaining project. Also, she's awesome because she thought of visuals at the same time.

#2 - Pressures of job causing shorter terms for college presidents by
Joe Kaiser and Sarah Hauer
It's always a joy to see months of research and undying journalistic persistence culminate into a project like this. I know it was stressful and frustrating, but this turned out great.

#1 - Summer court battles place interships under extra scrutiny by
Erin Heffernan
Here's another project that took months of research and interviewing to put together. Definitely my favorite article of the semester, which brought attention to a crucially important issue to students.
