NBC News’s coverage of President Obama’s inauguration spanned the full two days of the event. On Saturday NBC covered the private inauguration ceremony with historical facts and trivia. Sunday found NBC’s website dominated by a huge photo of the inaugural address as well as links to live coverage.
NBC live-tweeted the entire event, and surprisingly it was done with a lot of humor. I was not expecting to see as many political jokes in NBC’s tweets, but there were plenty on both sides of the political spectrum. NBC News provided a link both to the live video of the event and to its twitter feed on its home page, which made the experience more interactive.
I really appreciated that NBC provided a full transcript of Obama’s address with the video. Political rhetoric is so much more entertaining when one is able to see sentence structure, in my opinion.
NBC’s photo slideshow was very well done. The photos were powerful and showed the immensity of the event.
Other than the coverage of the event, NBC News included links to stories about Michelle Obama’s dress, the celebrities in attendance, and an interesting piece that covered the preparation for the event. In the end, NBC News’s coverage of the president’s inauguration really turned out to be more of an entertainment day than a news days. I guess that’s to be expected for an event such as this.
I do wish there was more coverage of what is to be expected politically for the next term. That type of coverage was left on the political page, as expected from a news site. Still, it would be nice to see links to the opinion pieces rather than to articles about the fashion of the event.
There was a few links on NBC’s website about MLK Day, but the primary focus was the inauguration. This was simply following the news hierarchy for the day.
